Early marriage among girls in India remains a significant social problem despite laws prohibiting it. This practice is often linked to poverty, tradition, and a lack of education. By marrying off their daughters—sometimes as young as 8—families believe they are reducing household expenses. However, early marriage can have serious consequences for girls’ health and future.
Many of them drop out of school and lose their chances of getting a good job. The Indian government and several organizations are working to raise public awareness, as education and the protection of children’s rights are essential to combating this phenomenon.
Rajani is not alone. Many children like her, all across India, face the same reality. Organizations like Rayon of Aasha and other initiatives are trying to bring about change, but there is still a long way to go toward equality. Rajani, for her part, keeps moving forward, one rupee at a time, hoping that one day the world will change for her and her family.
Today, classes are held in rented premises, but Rayon of Aasha's dream is to build a lasting school to transform the lives of many young girls.
Every quarter, you will receive a newsletter sharing precious moments from school life in India and news from the association in Switzerland. A way to stay close and to grow this wonderful project together.
