In India, women who are separated, widowed, or have left their husbands face significant social stigma, especially in rural areas. Many are viewed as an economic burden or held responsible for the failure of their marriage. Widows may be excluded from certain religious or family ceremonies, as they are sometimes considered to bring bad luck.
Access to housing, employment, and financial resources remains difficult, particularly for those who lack economic independence. Some women leave their husbands to escape domestic violence, forced marriages, or dowry-related abuse. The Indian legal system recognizes rights to divorce, alimony, and inheritance, but enforcement remains inconsistent. Local organizations and NGOs support these women through education and legal aid.
